At GTC 2026 in March, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stood on stage and told the audience that every company in the world needs an OpenClaw strategy. OpenClaw is the AI agent framework that hit 190,000 GitHub stars in fourteen days. It runs on the Model Context Protocol.
Most enterprise AI strategies in India have not mentioned that protocol once.
That gap, between the infrastructure layer that every production AI agent now depends on and the strategy conversations that most enterprise leaders are still having, is where the majority of AI programmes are stalling. Not because the models are wrong. Not because the use cases are unclear. Because the integration layer that makes an agent actually useful inside a real enterprise has not been addressed.
This is that conversation.
When an AI agent needs to do real work inside an enterprise, retrieve a customer record from the CRM, update a ticket in the project management system, read a file from the internal data warehouse, push a summary to Slack, it needs to connect to those systems. Every single one of them.
Before November 2024, this required custom engineering for every connection. Five AI models and ten enterprise tools meant fifty separate custom integrations. Each one had to be built, maintained, updated when the model changed, rebuilt when the tool changed its API. The technical debt compounded before most programmes had shipped a single production agent.
This is why most enterprise AI is stuck in pilots. Not because the AI is not good enough. Because the connective tissue between AI and the actual systems an enterprise runs on has been too expensive and too fragile to build at scale.

The majority of enterprise AI conversations in India right now are happening at the model layer. Which LLM to use. Whether to go with Claude or GPT-4 or Gemini. How large a context window the use case requires.
These are not wrong questions. But they are increasingly the secondary questions. The gap between frontier AI models is narrowing every quarter. The gap between enterprises that have built the integration infrastructure to actually deploy agents and those that have not, that gap is widening every month.
Recon Analytics surveyed over 120,000 enterprise respondents between March 2025 and January 2026. Only 8.6 percent had AI agents deployed in production. Meanwhile, 63.7 percent reported no formalised AI initiative at all. Gartner projects that 40 percent of enterprise applications will embed task-specific agents by the end of 2026, up from under 5 percent today.
The organisations that move from the 8.6 percent to the 40 percent over the next twelve months will almost certainly do it on MCP infrastructure. The ones still building proprietary custom connectors will arrive late, maintain more, and compound technical debt that makes the next deployment harder than the last.
The reason MCP is absent from most strategy conversations is the same reason cloud infrastructure was absent from early digital transformation conversations. Leaders assumed the infrastructure was someone else's problem, an IT concern, a developer concern, and focused on the applications instead. The organisations that got cloud right early were the ones whose strategic leaders understood enough about the infrastructure to make good decisions about the applications. The ones that got it wrong ended up with migration costs, fragmented architectures, and competitive disadvantage that took years to unwind.
MCP is that infrastructure decision for enterprise AI. It is already being made by default. The question is whether it is being made deliberately.
In November 2024, Anthropic released MCP as an open standard. By December 2025, they had donated it to the Linux Foundation, under the Agentic AI Foundation, co-founded by Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI, with backing from Google, Microsoft, AWS, and Cloudflare. MCP now sits in the same governance structure as Kubernetes and PyTorch.
For enterprise technology leaders making long-term infrastructure commitments, this is the signal that separates MCP from the protocols that achieve momentum and then fragment. It is not a single vendor's standard. It will not be deprecated when one provider pivots or discontinued when another acquires the team. It has the multi-stakeholder backing and neutral governance that makes it safe to build on at enterprise scale.
OpenAI adopted MCP in April 2025. Microsoft integrated it into Copilot Studio in July 2025. AWS added Bedrock support in November 2025. Forrester projects that 30 percent of enterprise software vendors will launch their own MCP servers, and that vendors adopting the standard will have measurably higher probability of enterprise-wide adoption. Gartner projects that 75 percent of API gateway vendors will add MCP features this year.
The ecosystem is not consolidating around MCP as a possibility. It has already consolidated. The 5,800-plus community servers cover the overwhelming majority of enterprise applications. Building on anything else at this point is building a proprietary layer on top of what is now standard infrastructure.
Most enterprise AI programmes can answer the model questions, which LLM, what use case, what budget. The organisations moving into production are the ones who can also answer the integration questions.
Map it. Every system an agent will need to touch, the ERP, the CRM, the data warehouse, the ticketing system, the internal knowledge base. For most enterprise tech stacks, an MCP server already exists for each of them. If one does not exist for a proprietary internal system, building it is a well-defined engineering task with a large community and clear documentation. The map tells you exactly where the integration work stands before you commit to a deployment timeline.
The security vulnerabilities in early MCP deployments are real, prompt injection through external content, credential exposure in misconfigured servers, tool permission overreach. The enterprises deploying agents securely built authentication controls, access scoping, and audit logging into the MCP layer before they went to production. The enterprises discovering these issues are recovering from them after incidents. Governance at the integration layer is not an IT security afterthought. It is what determines whether enterprise AI deployment generates trust or generates headlines.
The most powerful enterprise AI deployments are not single agents handling isolated tasks. They are coordinated agent workflows, one agent that diagnoses a problem, another that retrieves the relevant context, a third that executes the resolution, a fourth that logs the outcome and triggers the next step. The 91.4 percent of enterprises without AI agents in production are not all failing to move because of cultural resistance or budget constraints. Many have pilots running. Many have use cases identified. The obstacle showing up most consistently is the integration problem, agents that work well in a sandbox and break against real enterprise systems because the connective tissue was never properly built.
Every month that gap persists costs in two directions simultaneously. The competitive window for AI-driven productivity gains narrows. And the technical debt from custom integrations compounds, each new model version, each tool API change, each new use case requiring more maintenance work than the last.
The organisations that close this gap are not doing something exotic. They are making one deliberate architectural decision that most of their competitors have not made yet: to build on the integration standard that the entire industry has already adopted, rather than building proprietary connectors that will need to be rebuilt every time the ecosystem shifts.
